I: Necessary Violence
Violence is human nature. Decay is human nature. As is life and death. Nature is harsh, raw, and uncompromising. The conformist would say we need to revive beautiful styles like Gothic or Neo-Classicism, the neo-liberal would say we need to go on with these glass and steel constructions, these horrible Corpo buildings. There is a reason why the city dweller feels that he is not human, but just a drone, just another cog in the machine. These glass domes and curved expressionism are part of the reason. But times are getting harder and more violent. Architecture goes with it, because art and architecture go hand in hand with the spirit of the times. And it is the zeitgeist that affects people. Your city is designed to make you feel miserable and weak and domesticated, that's control by design. If your city were designed to empower you and make you feel good, that would be detrimental to our ruling class, because you would start to question them, and we can't have that, can we?
My thesis is that all these architects are lying. Expressionism, functionality, and simplicity are not popular styles. They are designed for livestock, for compliant automatons. I mean, look at your city, look at where these styles are primarily used. Not just in workplaces, but where people live, particularly in high-density urban centers, where people are always on edge, always stressed out. Maybe it's not the density that makes it so, as I once lived in a Brutalist miniature city myself, which was also an industrial wasteland. There was nothing but raw concrete – aka Béton Brut – as far as the eye could see. I must say it's a much more striking construction compared to today's modern styles, but it's a rock amidst the waves. It will stand the test of time, designed to be impressive. But compared to modern styles, it is not outright hostile to its inhabitants, because even gray Béton Brut holds more emotion than glass and steel. Brutalism is a great litmus test; it will distinguish the power-hungry from the weak-minded. Brutalism is designed to be violent, it is an eyesore wherever it manifests itself, but it also holds mystique.
II: Reflections
Brutalism reflects the essence of man and the system.
The ecognomic-driven System aims to subdue and regulate, while Man is intended to dominate Nature. Just as Brutalism is made to rule over man, it does not work for everyone. Some weak-minded individuals have no natural hunger for power, will not strive for change, nor will they ever become higher beings. They are incapable, physically and spiritually, of breaking out of the castrated caricature of man that they have crafted for themselves. They have no Wille zur Macht. Then there are the few who are willing to achieve their fate. Conquerors of nature, beasts themselves, primal forces reborn in modern man. Brutalism reflects this, dominating and destroying the spiritually eunuchs and setting the Conquerors free. To embody the Brutalist mindset is to subject yourself to the same harshness of Brutalist architecture - either you willingly break yourself down or you unwillingly shatter. The former is preferable, as it provides the necessary insights into human nature, while the latter turns you into compost, and to be honest, these people serve better as compost. No right or left wing. No right or wrong. Just contrasts of man’s morality. Sobriety of man’s needs and wants. As always the reasoning behind this is just: “Fuck em that’s why".
If you, dear reader, are not the authority in your own life, I cannot help you, nor do I want to be honest. It's not that I have contempt for you or anything like that. We are just not equals. Certain people are made to serve, and that's alright. You wouldn't want to be like me either.
As for the political reflection so even the most astute of you intellectuals can understand: People who get broken and ruined by concrete are soy, people who have Will and don’t have mental breakdowns at the sight of an ugly building are the silly goslings. I’m the silliest gosling.
III: Past, Future and Present
There's nothing to be earned by living in reactionary wet dreams. The present is no better. Therefore, we must strive for the future. While Brutalism was associated with communism in the past, the present features Corpo-Brutalism, which is leading society to a more disastrous outcome than ever before; Dystopia, but no fun allowed. Everything, including ourselves, is designed to sell and to be a product. So we should endeavor to achieve a groundbreaking future of Brutalism in both human beings and architecture. How can we accomplish this? I'm not here to provide that answer, dear reader, read some other works and combine them with my outlook, which I try to present in my writings. I'm only vibing, chilling and enjoying life. Just like you should. There's no need to discuss and uncover every detail of thought.
